V T Bhattatiripad

V.T. Bhattathiripad (1896-1982) was a renowned social reformer, dramatist, and freedom fighter from Kerala who played a pivotal role in transforming the Nambudiri Brahmin community. Born in Mezhathur, Kerala, he was deeply influenced by the Indian National Congress and its ideals, actively participating in the freedom struggle and facing imprisonment for his involvement.

Bhattathiripad's social reform efforts focused on challenging orthodox practices, particularly those affecting Nambudiri women, such as the restrictive ghosha veil system and denial of education. He advocated for widow remarriage, inter-caste marriages, and women's empowerment, often facing backlash from conservative factions. His play, "Adukkalayil Ninnu Arangathekku" (1929), was a landmark critique of casteism and orthodoxy, promoting social change.

Through the Yogakshema Sabha, an organization he was part of, Bhattathiripad worked tirelessly to modernize Nambudiri society, pushing for legislative changes like the Madras Nambudiri Act of 1933. His autobiography, "Kanneerum Kinavum" (1970), earned him the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1972, solidifying his legacy as a champion of social equality and reform .
